Fall cleanup planning

Raleigh Leaf Collection in Fall 2026: What to Plan Before a Yard Cleanup

Understand Raleigh’s 2026 leaf collection changes, residential pickup limits and contractor-debris rules before planning a leaf cleanup estimate.

Raleigh’s leaf collection rules changed this fall. Seasonal loose-leaf collection has been replaced by weekly yard-waste pickup, which began September 8, 2026. If you remember leaving a loose pile for a vacuum truck, check the current rules before planning this year’s cleanup.

This guide separates residential collection choices from the handling arrangements needed when you hire a contractor. YardU’s leaf removal service is a separate property-specific request; agree on the work and material handling in your written estimate.

What changed in Raleigh in September 2026?

The City of Raleigh says weekly yard-waste pickup replaced seasonal loose-leaf collection on September 8, 2026. Its current options are to put leaves in the yard-waste cart, use biodegradable paper bags for extra leaves, or keep leaves on your property through suitable mulching, garden-bed use or composting. A loose curbside pile is not the former vacuum-truck service. Raleigh’s leaf collection options

These are Raleigh’s rules. A mailing address containing “Raleigh” does not establish collection eligibility. Check who serves your address and your assigned collection day before setting anything out. Nearby communities have their own programs and requirements.

If you are using residential curbside collection

Raleigh’s preparation page allows a city-issued yard-waste cart, up to 15 biodegradable paper bags per collection with a 25-pound limit per bag, and up to five properly tied stick bundles. Plastic bags are not accepted. Bundles must meet the city’s size and weight limits. Raleigh yard-waste preparation rules

Yard waste may not be placed curbside before noon on the day before the assigned collection day. Follow the city’s current placement and removal instructions rather than leaving material out throughout the week. Check the official page again before collection if weather, holidays or service notices affect your plans.

Hiring a contractor changes the disposal question

Raleigh’s preparation rules explicitly exclude yard waste produced by contracted jobs or land clearing from curbside collection. Do not assume a contractor can finish a cleanup by leaving the material for the city’s residential pickup.

The municipal Yard Waste Center also says commercial vendors cannot drop off yard-waste materials there. Its resident drop-off option has fees and load restrictions; it is not a disposal arrangement for a commercial cleanup. Raleigh Yard Waste Center

Before hiring anyone, ask how the material will be handled, who is responsible for it, and whether hauling and disposal are included in the written estimate. YardU’s specific arrangement should be agreed for the property before work begins. This guide does not promise a disposal destination or an included hauling allowance.

Decide what you want cleared and what should stay

A useful request describes the finish you want, not just “remove the leaves.” A lawn, planted bed, patio and wooded edge may need different treatment. Identify the areas to include and any leaves, mulch or other material you want retained.

  • Photograph the full work areas as well as the heaviest buildup.
  • Mark beds, plants, borders and material that should stay in place.
  • Describe gates, steps, narrow access, parking and other constraints.
  • Identify twigs, fallen limbs or other material separately from leaves.
  • Explain whether the request is for one cleanup or a discussion about later visits as more leaves fall.

For work beyond accumulated leaves and agreed debris, compare property cleanup with leaf removal. Regular mowing and blowing off finished surfaces are a different scope from clearing existing buildup.

Questions to settle in the written estimate

  1. Which areas and material are included, and what stays untouched?
  2. How will collected material be handled, and who is responsible for hauling and disposal?
  3. Does the quoted amount include those arrangements or identify separate charges?
  4. How are unusually large limbs, unrelated material or extra work handled?
  5. What timing and access arrangements are confirmed?
  6. If more leaves fall after the visit, would another visit need a separate agreement?

Keep the answers with your estimate. The important distinction is between a cleared area, an agreed material-handling plan and a confirmed service date; one does not automatically establish the others.
